South Africa’s Only Driver’s license Printing Machine is Broken Again!
Imagine for one second if an entire country relied on one printer to print documents that were critical to its day-to-day operation. That’s not possible, right? Wrong!
Believe it or not, the entire country of South Africa, if we can even call it a country anymore, owns one machine capable of printing a driver’s license, ONE!
Unfortunately, their workhorse of a printer has broken down…..again! Resulting in long driver’s license renewal delays for people unlucky enough to call themselves citizens of South Africa. Apparently, this is the second time the driver’s license printing machine has broken in less than a year.
MyBroadband, which is the largest ICT news website in South Africa, reported that the country’s only machine capable of printing a driver’s license has broken down for the second time in less than a year.
“The machine is reported to have not been working for two weeks now, and there is an indication that processes are underway to ensure that by the end of this week, it is operational,”Eastern Cape’s acting Chief Director for Transport Regulations, Xolisa Jakula told Mybroadband
This isn’t the first time South Africa’s Only Drivers license Printing Machine Has broken down!
After the machine broke down in November 2021, it took a solid three months before it was able to print its driver’s licenses.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said that the driver’s license machine would have to be sent to Germany to be fixed, however, it was later confirmed that the machine never left South Africa.
According to Mbalula, the South African driver’s license printing machine is so old that it’s the only one still in operation anywhere in the world! Damn, the South African government needs to get themselves together, I am embarrassed for you. How can you not be ashamed of yourselves?
opinion of The Organization Undoing Tax Abuse’s CEO!
“For the minister to say they are now dealing with the problem in the sixth administration and that they have inherited this problem is not true,
This administration, with Mbalula in charge, has been in power for nearly three years.”Statement made by The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse’s CEO Wayne Duvenage
The Organization Undoing Tax Abuse’s also slammed the DoT’s failure to buy a new driver’s license printing machine, despite generating more than R400 million from renewals over the last nine years.
After Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the machine was broken once again and being repaired overseas in Germany, he announced that South Africa would be purchasing a new driver’s license printing machine and also issuing new driver’s licenses once the issue received approval from the cabinet.
The cabinet finally approved the new driver’s license card in early September 2022, and Mbalula said the new system would begin its pilot phase in November 2023. (Example of the new South African Drivers License shown below)
For the sake of everyone living in South Africa, let’s hope they can keep the new machine running better than they did the last one. I have an idea, for starters, how about sending someone to be trained to repair the machine instead of having to send the whole machine to another country!
