Russia’s “Fake News” Law Forces TikTok to Block all Russian Accounts.
TikTok Saying Goodbye to Russia!
On Sunday, Tiktok announced that it is blocking Russian users from posting new content and live-streaming over Russia’s New “fake news” law.
The new law, passed on Friday March 4th, 2022 by Russia’s parliament, makes it illegal to intentionally spread false information, including calling the Russian attack on Ukraine an “invasion” or a “war.”
In a Statement posted to Twitter, Tiktok said the following:
“In light of Russia’s new ‘fake news’ law, we have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new content to our video service while we review the safety implications of this law. Our in-app messaging service will not be affected.
We will continue to evaluate the evolving circumstances in Russia to determine when we might fully resume our services with safety as our top priority,” it continued.
Harsh Penalty For Breaking Russias Fake News Law
Under the new legislation, journalists who contradict the country’s official statements about the Ukraine invasion can now face up to 15 years in prison, according to the reports out of Russia on Friday.
All Russian news organizations must now allow government officials to review their stories before releasing them to the public.
Russian civilians who aren’t members of the media can also face criminal charges under the new law for reposting information on social media that contradicts the Kremlin. The charges could include fines of up to $44,740.
BBC News and a slew of other media organizations pulled their journalists out of Russia on Friday after the law was passed.
My Thoughts on Russias Newly Passed Law against Fake News.
I believe passing such a heavy handed law shows Putin is nervous. He knows he’s gotten himself and his people into a mess and he’s not sure how to get out of it. So, he keeps doubling down with one terrible decision after another.
If I had to take an educated guess, the part about News organizations having to inform the government what they’re reporting isn’t much of a change in Russia. It wouldn’t be much of a change in the United States either, honestly.
Which is why the penalty so awful. When a reporter gets the nerve to break away from his peers, stop following the talking points and tell the truth. To then impose such a harsh penalty is terrible.
But I bet it’s damn effective! And people not following talking points is exactly what this law tries to stop.
Receiving 15 years in prison for calling this invasion an invasion or even a war. It’s absurd penalty and seems as if Putins been taking pointers on how to lead from North Korea.
By now most people understand the mainstream media is to some degree an arm of government. Regardless of which country we’re talking about. However, with this new fake news law, Russia is stating it loud and clear. Never again can a news report coming from a Russian media outlet be trusted, Period!
