Police Chase Ends With Car Flying Through 3 Yards Crashing Into Carport & Running over Deputy
While being pursued by police at high speeds, Xavier Atwater-Smith, launched his getaway vehicle into the air, flipping & crashing into a carport inside of a residential neighborhood.
The homeowner told FOX8 that his vehicle went through three different neighbors’ yards, across the intersection and then into the hill that slopes along the side of her house.
The vehicle launched several feet into the air before colliding with the woman’s covered carport.
According to police, Graham police tried to pull Atwater-Smith over for a routine traffic stop. He allegedly refused and instead led officers on a high speed chase that spanned through parts of the city that included downtown Graham and several neighborhoods adjacent to it.
An Alamance County deputy who joined the pursuit attempted to block the suspect’s vehicle.
Instead, the suspect allegedly hit the front of the deputy’s squad car. The deputy then got out of the vehicle and tried to stop the 23-year-old.
The crash report shows that the suspect put his vehicle in reverse and ran over the deputy’s foot before he drove off.
After running over the deputies foot he lost control of his vehicle leading to the crash. The deputy was not seriously hurt and was treated at the hospital.
The suspect faces charges of felony assault on a government official and felony assault with intent to kill or inflict serious injury.
