Insane fad diets are not a modern invention. As a matter of fact old Hollywood stars came up with some very weird diets of their own including the Grace Kelly Diet.
Here we’ll be letting you in on the diet secrets of the biggest stars Hollywood has ever known. The star diets include Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and more.
Let’s begin with one of the biggest stars to ever step foot in Tinsel Town.
Marilyn Monroe –
Marilyn Monroe was one of those once in a lifetime icons. As you read this, 60 years after her death, someone is buying an item with her face on it. That my friends is called star power. Women the world over wanted her figure but I bet they’d pass on her diet which consisted of…
- Breakfast: 2 raw eggs whipped in warm milk
- Lunch: Nothing
- Dinner: Broiled Liver Steak or Lamb & 5 Carrots
Nope, not me.
Betty Grable –
Betty Grable starred in 42 films during the 1930s and 1940s that grossed more than $100 million. For 10 consecutive years she reigned in the Quigley Poll’s top 10 box office stars. So you can imagine quite a few ladies wanted her secret to staying fit.
Once they heard what it was though, I bet they decided to find a different star to copy. Her diet has to be one of the worst I’ve ever heard of, it consisted of…
- All Day – she would snack on raw onions and garlic throughout the day
I really hope she carried some good breath mints.
Grace Kelly –
Grace Patricia Kelly was an American actress who, after starring in several significant films in the early to mid-1950s, became Princess of Monaco by marrying Prince Rainier III in April 1956. So, quite a few young girls felt the need to copy Grace Kelly’s life. Her diet not so much.
- Breakfast: Oatmeal
- Rest of the Day: as many carrot sticks as she could eat before 11:00 a.m. and then nothing afterwards until breakfast the next morning
You know by breakfast the next morning she was devouring some oatmeal.
Elizabeth Taylor –
Elizabeth Taylor began her career as a child actress in the early 1940s and was one of the most popular stars of the 1950’s. In the 1960’s she became the highest paid movie star in the world. Taylor remained a public figure for the rest of her life.
Elizabeth Taylor would diet 6 out of 7 days of the week. She didn’t eat very much with a diet consisting of mainly dried toast.
- All day 6 days a week: small portions of dried toast
- 7th day: sour cream mixed with cottage cheese
So her splurge day meant eating sour cream and cottage cheese? Wow, really going all out.
Jacqueline Kennedy –
Although she wasn’t a movie star she was just as famous and influential as anyone in Hollywood. Her diet secret involved eating only once per day.
- One Daily Meal: baked potato topped with caviar
Leave it to a Kennedy to make one meal a day seem entitled. Topping a baked potato with caviar, lol.
Nita Naldi –
Nita Naldi was an American stage performer and silent film actress. She popularized a diet plan called the “Lam Chop and Pineapple Plan”.
- Breakfast: two slices of pineapple
- Lunch: a lamb chop and 1 slice of pineapple
- Dinner: 2 lamb chops and 2 slices of pineapple
On second thought, maybe she shouldn’t be included in this list with all the food she ate. 2 lamb chops? The Glutton.
Gloria Swanson –
Gloria Swanson was an American actress, producer, and businesswoman. She first achieved fame acting in dozens of silent films in the 1920s and was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Gloria Swanson had a recipe for “Double Corn Soup” consisting of chopped onions, water, few drops of olive oil, soy sauce and a half cup of cornmeal.
So basically “double corn soup” meant nothing.
Joan Crawford –
Joan Crawford started as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies before debuting on Broadway. Crawford was signed to a motion picture contract by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. Crawford often played hardworking young women who find romance and financial success.
Her diet is also one of the worst on the list in my opinion.
Joan Crawford only ate a few spoonfuls of cold beef consomme and 6 crackers with mustard.
There’s no way Joan Crawford wasn’t absolutely starving every day of her life.
Orson Welles –
Orson Welles gained 50 lb and needed to drop the weight to play the lead role in citizen Kane. To do so he came up with a crash diet.
For a month he ate only orange juice, salad without any dressing and boiled eggs.
So he ate lettuce and boiled eggs. Luckily it was only for a month.
Maria Callas –
Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano who was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century.
She thought out of the box and went in a strange direction to lose weight. To speed up her metabolism she found a doctor to inject iodine directly into her thyroid.
Now this woman didn’t care about the consequences. She wanted to be skinny no matter what. Iodine straight to the thyroid, dammit girl.
Jean Harlow –
Jean Harlow was an American actress. Known for her portrayal of “bad girl” characters, she was the leading sex symbol of the early 1930s and one of the defining figures of American cinema. Often nicknamed the “Blonde Bombshell” and the “Platinum Blonde”, Harlow was popular for her “Laughing Vamp” screen persona.
Jean Harlow also followed an extreme diet consisting of tomatoes and coffee. She followed what was known as “The Four Day Diet”
- Breakfast: Nothing
- Lunch: 2 tomatoes with Black Coffee
- Dinner: 2 tomatoes with Black Coffee
4 tomatoes and 2 cups of black coffee. Her and Joan Crawford would’ve made great contestants on Celebrity Survivor.
Did you find a diet you wanted to try? No? I don’t eat that much anyway and I can’t blame you. These diets are freaking awful. Just eat what you want, just don’t eat too much of it and you’ll be perfectly fine.
