Nikola Tesla’s Thoughts Camera was Ahead of its Time!
This invention is of particular interest to me because I suffer from the condition Aphantasia. Which means I don’t have a “minds eye”. In other words I can’t see images in my mind.
It makes me wonder if Nikola Tesla’s thoughts camera would be able to pick up an image I myself couldn’t see. Either way, lets take a look at what his thoughts camera would’ve been.
Who was Nikola Tesla?
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian scientist born on July 10th, 1856. Tesla would revolutionize electricity delivery and radio technology. The inventor even predicted modern inventions such as mobile phones.
One of Tesla’s inventions never became more than one of Nikola Tesla’s crazy ideasa. It was Nikola Tesla’s Thought Camera.
Way back in the late 1800’s Nikola Tesla believed it was possible to photograph thoughts.
The bizarre inspiration for Nikola Tesla’s thoughts camera came while conducting an experiment in 1893. Decades later Tesla told a newspaper reporter:
I became convinced that a definite image formed in thought must, by reflex action, produce a corresponding image on the retina, which might possibly be read by suitable apparatus.Nikola Tesla
Tesla conceived of reflecting an image on an artificial retina, taking a photograph and projecting the image on a screen.
‘If this can be done successfully, then the objects imagined by a person would be clearly reflected on the screen as they are formed and in this way every thought of the individual could be read. Our minds would then, indeed, be like open books.Nikola Tesla
Modern Scientists have Built a Thoughts Camera!
Flash forward to 2022 and there are scientists working on a way to read our thoughts.
There’s even a project enlisting the help of Artificial Intelligence to decipher what our neurons are doing and convert it into text.
“Right now, it’s a bit like seeing through a heavy fog, but researchers at the Chang Lab at the University of California at San Francisco have trained a machine-learning algorithm to extract meaning from neuronal data.”Big Think Article
Although it’s not exactly what Tesla had in mind it’s not a huge difference. In the future more technological trickery may be possible such as the ability to record and play back our dreams or communicate with one another telepathically through brain implants or neural laces.
As were many of his inventions, Nikola Tesla’s thoughts camera was 100 years or so ahead of it’s time.
