For three long, anxiety inducing hours, a pilot flew a stolen airplane over north Mississippi Saturday morning, causing panic on the ground as the pilot continued threatened to crash the plane into the Walmart below.

Authorities say a man flew a stolen Beechcraft King Air C90A, airplane over a Mississippi Walmart for more than 3 hours while threatening to crash it into the store.

The man, Cory Wayne Patterson is now facing charges of grand larceny and terroristic threats.

Tupelo Police Chief John Quaka said at a press conference that Cory Wayne Patterson didn’t have a pilot’s license but had some flight instruction and was an employee of Tupelo Aviation. Authorities said Patterson stole the plane, took off and then called in the threat to 911.

The plane started circling over Tupelo at about 5 a.m. Officers evacuated a Walmart and a convenience store in Tupelo because of the pilot threatened to intentionally crash into the Walmart.

The plane flew over Tupelo for more than three hours before flying toward more rural areas.

Cory Wayne Patterson eventually safely landed the plane in a field, and police took the home into custody!
