Did you know? FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps was the most successful peacetime mobilization in US History?

Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan is loosely based on part of FDR’s New Deal, The Civilian Conservation Corps. Which was a huge success and gave millions of unemployed young men jobs during the Great Depression in 1933.

This post isn’t about the merits of Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan, I’m sure everyone has their own opinion of that, but rather to learn about FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps. I don’t believe most people are aware of the huge impact this peacetime mobilization had at the time, I certainly wasn’t.

What was The Civilian Conservation Corps?

In 1933, as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was founded.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work relief program that gave millions of young men employment on environmental projects during the Great Depression.

The CCC is still considered the most rapid peacetime mobilization in US history.

Considered by many to be one of the most successful of Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, the CCC planted more than three billion trees and constructed trails and shelters in more than 800 parks nationwide during its nine years of existence. The CCC helped to shape the modern national and state park systems we enjoy today.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, with an executive order on April 5, 1933.

The United States Army helped to solve an early logistical problem – transportation. Most of the unemployed men were in Eastern cities while much of the conservation work was in the West.

The CCC was only active for nine years, in that time the Civilian Conservation Corps,

  • Employed nearly 3 million men
  • Planted over 3.5 billion trees
